I love fishing Wiggle Minnows.
Lets start off with how the Shenandoah and James River are fishing. Excellent. They are both fishing excellent. The Shenandoah has been producing unbelievable numbers of fish this summer. The majority of fish are on the smaller side, under 14″ however, you can expect a few of them to be in the very respectable range 16+”.
The James River. Some of you will agree with me, some of you won’t. Oh well, such is life. Tough, good, great. Depending on the day you fished it, you experienced one of those. We haven’t had any big number days on the James, but most of our big fish have come from the James this summer. If quality over quantity is what you’re looking for the James River is where you want to spend a day or two.
Fly selection. The top water bite is very good right now. Poppers and cicada patterns are great choices right now. It’s hard for me to take the Wiggle minnow off. I love it because it’s a great mix of a popper and streamer. Best of both worlds in my opinion. Throw what makes you happy. In the low clear water we have been having I would recommend throwing what makes you happy on a 9′ 2x leader. If you can stretch you leader out longer then 9′ and still turn it over? Go for it. It wont hurt one bit.
Salmon River, New York.
I know a number of you from Central Virginia fish the Salmon River in New York in September and October. As many of you know we take a trip up there ourselves the last week of September every year. I normally don’t start looking at the fishing reports until around the 1st of September however, I messed up this year and took a peak. Not good. I mean, the reports are very good. Lake reports have been great and they have even seen some salmon in the river already. I mean not good because I know I will drive myself crazy checking the report everyday from now until we get there. If you want to join me in my self torture, here is the link to the Douglaston Salmon Run fishing report.
Tight lines.
