Fish Report: Big Bend Farm Trophy Trout Fishing-11/15/2011
Just got done stocking another 250 big rainbows AND 250 Browns @ Big Bend Farm last week. Fishing is fantastic right now especially as the temps have been warmer than usual leading to increased bug activity. The dry fly fishing has been outstanding on size 14 Elk Hair Caddis, especially in the afternoon.

Big Bend Farm Fishing Great!

Big Bend Farm Fishing Great!

Just a quick update from our private water on Big Bend Farm. Fishing is as good as it ever gets with 50-70 fish per angler. Water is low and clear and fish are taking a variety of flies the best being the Detonator and tan or green Zebra midges. Browns and Rainbows are pulling hard and leaves are changing. We still have some mid-week availability so book now as we are limiting rods to 5 per day.

Fish Report-Big Bend Farm Update

Just got done stocking another 300 big rainbows @ Big Bend Farm today then fished my new Hardy Zenith 9′ 4wt with the matching ultralight 2000 click reel for about 3 hours. wow. Fishing is fantastic right now. Landed 30-40 fish including rainbows and browns. Fishing is pretty simple right now and they will take a variety of patterns–a few times. Hot pattern, however, is my Detonator Soft Hackle. You can see how to tie it here It is meant to imitate an emerging caddis. For those that don’t know, October brings a prolific caddis hatch to the Cowpasture. I fish this pattern in 12-16. Just throw across stream and let it swing down to fish. Sometimes i give it a bump or two if fish need some encouragement. They didn’t today. I custom tie this pattern in lots of 6. Contact me if you want some.
The Hardy Zenith did not disappoint. It is a real light weight with lots of backbone and it just feels easy and light in your hand. The Ultralite click reel was a pleasure especially on Big Bend’s 18″ rainbows. They sure take a bunch of line! If you want to hear your reel scream, this is the place. We still have some openings for October but I’m thinking it will fill up in the next two weeks so if you want a spot please call us at 434.977.6882 to schedule. See our private waters page for more info on this fantastic trophy trout fishery.

We are looking forward to a great year this year with our private water, Big Bend Farm on the Cowpasture.  We will be stocking 1000 rainbow and brown trout on September 21.  Fly fishing in Virginia doesn’t get much better than this!  We anticipate a mid-September opening if water levels and temps cooperate.  Last year October turned out to be the most outstanding month of the whole year with HUGE caddis hatches coming off daily on warmer days.  The fish were fresh and water levels were in the 400-600 cfs range making for easy wading and ideal fishing conditions.  I expect the Farm to fill up for October by the 3rd week of September. For those of you not familiar with our setup, we offer 1 1/2 miles of private farm water, heavily stocked, that is open to only 5 anglers per day.  Fees are $90 per angler and guides are available upon request.  Book now to insure your spot this fall.  434-977-6882

Summer smallmouth fishing report

Summer smallmouth fishing report

Fishing is fantastic right now, especially on overcast days. Trips on the james and Shenandoah rivers are producing 30-40 fish per day per angler on sunny days and at least twice that when we have overcast. Most of the pm thunderstorms are not blowing the rivers out but are keeping water levels just right for floating and fishing. If you like fishing Poppers now is prime time. Smallmouth bass are just crushing the topwater stuff.

Fish Report–Central Virginia

Fish Report Central VirginiaWelcome to our fish report for mid-May.

Wow!  We continue to get rain in biblical proportions.  All rivers except the high blue ridge streams are blown out and probably will continue to be for a few days to come barring any further rain.  Its been a tough spring to say the least.  During interludes between the rain we are getting great fishing everywhere including lakes.  Big Bend Farm, our private water, has been great when water levels come below 800 cfs.  Brook trout fishing is great and is probably the best bet this week.  Reports of 30-40 fish per day are coming in.  We’ll keep you posted on current conditions as they improve this following week.  As a reminder, Big Bend Farm will close for the summer on May 25 and re-open in early to mid September.  We ARE currently taking reservations for fall.

Smallmouth season is upon us and fish are starting to take poppers.  Of course this is dependant upon the flows.  This next week should fish well for anyone on the James or Shenandoah Rivers.  To book a trip call 434.977.6882

Fish Report for Central Virginia

Fish Report for Central VirginiaFish Report: General Conditions
Temps are on the rise and trout fishing is in full swing. Mtn streams are kicking out brookies. We’re getting rain which is good news. The bad news is we’re getting rain. Its always a double edged sword this time of year because we need the water but too much water will blow out some streams. All streams are fishable at this point but check waterflows before you go. We stocked Big Bend Farm on April 4th with 500 lbs of large rainbow trout. Fishing is outstanding. We now have an online calendar for Big Bend which you can view here.
