Wow! Had a chance to cast the new orvis Clearwater rods @orvis today with the new hydros lines. The lines are really nice with a baotload of new improved tech features but the rods really blew me away. Superlight and they cast like a dream. They are also being designed along the same load points and ratios as the Helios rods (I could explain but then I’d have to kill you…) So the casting feel is very similar. Best rod under $300 I’ve ever cast. These are going to be real winners especially at $198.

The Sage One has been one of the most anticipated rods of 2012. I was excited to test the rod myself considering all the hype surrounding its release and the many industry awards it has already received. A recent visit from the Sage rep provided me with the opportunity to cast the 9ft 5wt freshwater model and my first impressions were favorable. The black blank and wood reel seat were understated but classy and the rod felt incredibly light in hand. Another detail that stood out was the grip. Unlike most rods which feature a reverse half wells, all Freshwater rods have a full wells grip making it very comfortable to cast, especially for those with medium to large hands. Saltwater models will feature the typical full wells with a fighting butt.

At practical trout fishing distances (20-50ft) I found the 5wt to be incredibly smooth, accurate, and crisp. Such attributes are a result of Sage’s new Konnetic Technology. This is not just a marketing term, but can truly be felt in casting the rod. The tip had good torsional stability yet still felt very sensitive. On the water this should result in enhanced accuracy, better line feel, and increased tippet protection. The One will be available in weights 3-10, good for everything from brook trout to permit and stripers. We should have some of these exceptional rods by mid-September so stop by and give them a try. You won’t be disappointed.

Wow! What a mind blower! Not only are the reels light and made with machined aluminum but the price point blew me away. These reels look and feel like most of the top offerings from other well known reel companies costing almost twice as much. These reels come in click and disc drag models and feature ultra large arbors with narrow width spools. The drag feels solid the the quality of the metal and workmanship is impeccable like all Hardy products. What I can’t understand is the price: Most models list for just over $200. This is a $400 reel for half price! I am so impressed with this reel that I just ordered the Click Ultralight 2000 for my 4wt Zenith rod. That will be a nice combo this fall on Big Bend Farm throwing streamers. Come on in and get your hands on these ultralight Hardy reels and see what I’m talking about. I really thing you’ll be impressed by this new piece of fly fishing gear.

We now have the new Hardy Zenith and Proaxis fly rods in stock. These are amazing fishing rods that are winning accolades in the fly fishing community. The Hardy Zenith is the freshwater offering which won the Yellowstone Shootout recently over rods like the Helios and Zaxis. The Hardy Proaxis is the saltwater version of the same rod with the new Recoil guide system. It was designed by Andy Mill for big game fly fishing. Below is Hardy’s write up on the Zenith and Proaxis fly rods:
“The Proaxis ranges of 1 and 4 section fly rods have been designed and developed by Hardy in conjunction with some of the worlds finest saltwater guides and anglers.

Our development team, led by five times Tarpon Gold Cup Grand Champion, Andy Mill, have pushed Hardy’s new Sintrix technology to the absolute limit – and the end result is staggering in both performance and durability.

These fast-action rods are loaded with cutting edge features, like lightweight saltwater-safe hardware, titanium recoil guides and, of course, Hardy’s revolutionary Sintrix material. Proaxis rods are lighter, stronger, more impact resistant and capable of withstanding much higher loads than standard graphite fly rods.

So, with less chance of damage, you can cast further, fish longer and fight harder when pursuing big saltwater species.

With all the benefits of the 1-Section rods, the 4-Section Proaxis have been designed and developed to offer the ultimate rod for the professional saltwater fly angler – but in an easy to transport, four section format.”

In September, I had the opportunity to test out the new Orvis Superfine Touch trout rod on the Smith River in southern Virginia. I’m a big fan of slightly softer rods, especially for trout and in the lighter weights. I’ve always liked the superfine series by Orivs but the old brown rods were, well, boring… A couple of years ago Orvis did a great job with the remake and redesign of the superfine with the “troutbum” series. The changes were mainly cosmetic but welcome.
For 2011 Orvis has hit the ball out of the park. The new Superfine “touch” uses the same resin and technology that made the Helios a world beater. Its light, its responsive and its powerful.
When i fished this rod I could make pinpoint casts and tracking was effortless. I loved the feel of this rod. You can feel the superfine heritage in this rod and in a bow to its pedigree, Orvis left the blank unsanded with ridges. The grey blank, rust red wraps, and gold hardware make for an elegant but understated fishing tool. The new Superfine is currently available in anthing from 6ft to 8ft configurations in 1-5 weights. Come take a test cast now at our store. I think you’ll like it. I did.

Let’s start by saying that I typically review only rods that really impress me and this review is no exception: the new TFO Clouser rod is phenomenal especially when you consider the $250 price tag and typical TFO lifetime warranty. When i first took the rod out of the case I noticed that while we had the typical blue blank, it was a color of blue I hadn’t seen before which i like. It also includes the “fly” graphic above the grip. In addition, the burled cork rings on the grip are a nice touch. The rods all come in a 4 piece configuration.
I consider TFO rods as a whole to be the best value in fly rods today. Mind you, they’re not the best rods out there but for the money they are tough to beat. This rod is no exception and is by far my favorite saltwater caster. I had despised the old TICR-x—it’s a broomstick fit for a witch. The Axiom is a great rod and I was happy to see it come along a couple of years ago but the Clouser sets a new standard in castability: I feel it comes in head and shoulders over the Axiom. While the Clouser doesn’t feel as light as a very high end rod such as the Orvis Helios or Sage Xi3, it has a great balance and substantial feel without being heavy. What really sets this rod apart from others is its castability: it is effortless to cast. You can feel the tip load easily, loop is easy to control and it has plenty of reserve power. With minimal effort you can cast 80ft and it will chuck the whole fly line with power to spare. Sure there are other rods which have this power but they seem to me a bit more difficult to control. The Clouser is pinpoint accurate and positive. The rod was actually designed to throw weighted flies and sinking lines and this it will accomplish well but that doesn’t mean its not a terrific tool for your standard floating line. The only rod in this price range that comes close to this is the Grey’s Platinum XD saltwater (which is a close second). Finally, the only odd thing about this rod is its limited configuration: it only comes in one length. 8 feet 9 inches but it covers line weights 5-10. It’s a home run from TFO and Bob Clouser at a price that you can afford. As Bob Clouser says about this rod, “Light in the hand and super sensitive…..I like to say, “I can feel them breathing on the fly as they inhale it”.

As many of you know, the fly fishing industry is moving quickly toward all rubber soles on most of the new wading boots to combat the spread of invasive species. The newest entry into the market from Orvis is the Riverguard series of boots. We highly recommend studs on all Vibram wading boots but the good news is that the Riverguard boots by Orvis come with studs. Our testiing has seemed to bear out the fact that rubber is more durable and offers better traction when studs are used than felt alone. This video explains more about the boot.

Check out the new Orvis Video on the Orvis Hydros Rods that are new this year. If you haven’t already heard, the Hydros is “the poor man’s Helios”. The Helios broke the barrier for all fly rods when it was introduced last year and is by far, the lightest fly rod on the market. It also happens to by my favorite casting rod too. But what to do when you don’t have $750+ to spend on your next fly rod? Enter the Hydros: made with the same technology and tapers, it is just a bit heavier and lighter at the same time: heavier in weight, lighter on your wallet. We have these rods in stock now at the Albemarle Angler and you can come in and test cast them anytime. I think you will be impressed by what Orvis is doing with their rods. I am.

House of Hardy

If you like classic fly tackle you’ll like this: we’ve picked up the Hardy line of Rods and Reels. We were very impressed with both when we had a chance to case them recently. Especially impressive is the classic series of rods and reels that show traditional Hardy styling and quality. Their fiberglass brook trout rod is impressive, especially when you get a look at the less than premium price. I bought one for myself! Some of you may be familiar with the Perfect, Cascapedia and Bougle reels that are some of the first (and best) trout reels ever made. We’ve got em and they won’t break the bank.
