This Saturday, January 22, John Schmidt will be demonstrating some unique streamers and saltwater patterns. John is a local Cville resident with years of experience. John is known for his creative use of materials and innovative patterns. I just got back from Florida where i had a chance to fish his deer hair water dog for redfish. What a great fly! In addition, John ties some great smallmouth patterns that we used last season. Even if you don’t normally fish saltwater or bass you will learn a lot about the use of many different materials and techniques by watching John tie. Coffee will be on at 10am. We’ll finish up around noon. You don’t need to RSVP–just come as you are. If you want to tie with us, bring materials and a vise.
Join us for our FREE fly tying class on Saturday, January 29. We will start tying at 10 and go till noon. Bring your materials and tools and tie along with us. I will be showing you how to tie the Detonator Soft Hackle which has been one of the most successful patterns on Big Bend Farm this year. Techniques involve tying with biot and quill bodies and innovative soft hackling techniques. In addtion we will be tying up some Kreelex streamers. If you have not fished a Kreelex you need to. We have them for sale but they are easy to tie and we have the materials in stock. Free coffee and friends. As always we will be available to answer questions and talk about any tying questions on your mind–we are not limited to just the “fly of the day”.
2-3 times a year we offer our Orvis Endorsed Fly Fishing Schools here in Central Virginia. Our classes of ten students and 2 instructors head up to Rose River Farm to the “old barn” and enjoy a great day of learning about fly fishing and making new friends. We tailor our fly fishing schools to beginning fly fisher’s. Our goal is that for someone who has never fly fished before, a complete beginner fly fisher, that at the end of the day you should be able to walk onto a trout stream and know how to fly cast, tie knots, pick the right fly, be familiar with your equipment and be able to catch and land fish without a guide. (We still humbly suggest that you may catch more fish with a guide however!).
Our fly fishing school starts at 9am and goes until 4pm. We provide bagels and coffee to get everyone going then dive into our classroom portion of the instruction. After listening to Gordon ramble on about fly fishing equipment we take a break and head outside by the lake (conveniently loaded with bass for your fishing pleasure) for some fly casting instruction. This is a hands on fly fishing class after all.
We provide a full lunch then do a short multimedia show that cover fly selection and fly fishing techniques. After this we head back out to the lake to try some advanced fly casting techniques and catch more fish. We’ve never had a class where every student didn’t catch at least one fish! I’m thinking that must be some kind of record (yes, we’ve had much more than one class!)
Orvis Endorsed Fly Fishing School participants are eligible for 10% discount when purchasing a complete fly fishing package from us. We think you’re going to love this sport. It’s really not as hard as most people think!

Back by popular demand (and because its just a lot of fun…) we are starting up our free fly tying classes again this January. Many of you requested that we hold our classes on Saturday’s last year because you were unable to attend during a week day. This year we will be holding our free fly tying classes on Saturday mornings from 10-12. Our first class will be covering fly tying basics from tools to techniques on Jan 8. You don’t have to have equipement to attend but if you do its a good idea to bring it since we have a limited number of loaner vises. You will need to buy your own tying materials (cheap). We will cover 4 basic patterns that will cover 90% of the techniques you need to tie most trout flies and streamers. We’ll provide the free coffee and the jokes. You just show up.

Bring your own rod or we have some demo rods available to use if you are just starting out. We will meet in the parking lot behind the shop. This is the second of a two part casting series.
