2-3 times a year we offer our Orvis Endorsed Fly Fishing Schools here in Central Virginia. Our classes of ten students and 2 instructors head up to Rose River Farm to the “old barn” and enjoy a great day of learning about fly fishing and making new friends. We tailor our fly fishing schools to beginning fly fisher’s. Our goal is that for someone who has never fly fished before, a complete beginner fly fisher, that at the end of the day you should be able to walk onto a trout stream and know how to fly cast, tie knots, pick the right fly, be familiar with your equipment and be able to catch and land fish without a guide. (We still humbly suggest that you may catch more fish with a guide however!).
Our fly fishing school starts at 9am and goes until 4pm. We provide bagels and coffee to get everyone going then dive into our classroom portion of the instruction. After listening to Gordon ramble on about fly fishing equipment we take a break and head outside by the lake (conveniently loaded with bass for your fishing pleasure) for some fly casting instruction. This is a hands on fly fishing class after all.
We provide a full lunch then do a short multimedia show that cover fly selection and fly fishing techniques. After this we head back out to the lake to try some advanced fly casting techniques and catch more fish. We’ve never had a class where every student didn’t catch at least one fish! I’m thinking that must be some kind of record (yes, we’ve had much more than one class!)
