Carson is a native of southeast Florida. He moved from Florida to Colorado at age thirteen where he fell in love with fly fishing. He is a self taught angler that has fine tuned his fly fishing skills over the past 40 years, 15 of which have been in Charlottesville, Va. Although cold freshwater is what he would call his specialty, his ability to locate fish, read fish behavior and catch or teach others how to catch any species in any environment is second to none.
Scott is a Virginia native, born and raised among the Blue Ridge Mountains chasing wild brook trout and smallmouth bass. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 2009, and after a couple of stints out in Colorado and Montana he returned home to start guiding with The Albemarle Angler in 2012. During his time with the shop, Scott has developed a keen and progressive guiding style that strives to leave every angler with a new skill or perspective from their time on the water. Additionally, Scott hosts several of Albemarle Angler’s destination trips from Tennessee to Idaho, Belize, Cuba and beyond. He’ll surely have a good story to share about a big fish somewhere in the world, while helping you to find and catch one of your own!
Spotswood Payne is a Virginia native, born in Roanoke VA and raised in Nelson Co VA. Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Spotswood or “Wood” cut his teeth as a fly angler on the multitude of native Brook trout streams that cover the east slope of the Blue Ridge, as well as the main stems and tributaries of the James and Shenandoah rivers. After graduating Hampden-Sydney College and working with Virginia Fishing Adventure, Wood began his time with the Albemarle Angler in February 2013. Coupled with his immensely local knowledge and his experiences in many fisheries across the nation, Spotswood continues to strive to provide our anglers with the best freshwater fly fishing experience possible on our Virginia waters.
Rivers, Streams, and Mountains of Virginia have been his home for the past 30 years. Growing up on the edge of a river has allowed him to understand the waters and the life that surrounds. After fishing the rivers for trout and bass from an early age using conventional tackle, John picked up fly fishing at age 15. While attending college at Radford University on the banks of The New River he continued to expand his pursuit of smallmouth bass. Once finishing a degree in biology, he returned to central Virginia and began working with The Albemarle Angler. He has been guiding for trout and bass with The Albemarle Angler since 2012. Fly Fishing for all Virginia’s swimming species is John’s preferred, but hunting for Virginia’s land animals is a very close second. Hope to see you out there!
