Looking for a great tropical escape for this winter? La Pescadroa is a great place to spend a week in January or February. I was just checking flights during those months and had to share to try to help with ideas to beat the Winter Blues. There are some amazingly cheap flights, Delta from Dulles, Delta from Richmond, American from Dulles, American from Richmond. If you’d like to spend a week this winter with your toes in the sand and a fish on the end of your line? It’s only a phone call or email away.
La Pescadora, located just south of the small fishing village of Punta Allen on the Yucatan Peninsula, is one of the best fishing focused lodges in the Caribbean and not to mention one of the best values in destination travel fly fishing. With direct access to the famed fisheries of Ascension Bay and the surrounding lagoons just a few minute boat ride from the lodge. La Pescadora offers guided fishing on some of the best saltwater sportfish habitat in the world.
Situated on a beautiful beach, your room is only steps from the boats and a turtle grass flat that holds bonefish and permit. The lodge features a beautiful open floor plan with exposed exotic hardwoods and an intimate feel. Each of the four cabanas, two on each side of the main lodge sleep two, are well appointed and air conditioned.
Upon arrival you will receive a warm welcome by the lodge staff with hors d’oeuvres and a tropical beverage. After settling in you will meet your guides that will help you setup your rods, reels, leaders, and go over your fly selection to ensure you are ready for the following morning and week. 7wts for bonefish, 9wts for permit and snook, and 10-12wts for tarpon are the weights of choice.
La Pescadora uses 24 foot pangas staffed with two guides. Pangas are the perfect boat for this part of the world. Providing plenty of room, a smooth and dry ride if conditions get choppy and a stable casting platform. While your head guide is on the poling platform scanning for nervous water/fish your second/Jr guide will help ensure you are ready when the opportunity presents its self.
Any given day the flats and lagoons could hold a SUPER grand slam (bonefish, permit, tarpon & snook). Even though this feat can be difficult to accomplish, Ascension Bay is one of the best places in the world to achieve it. The various species of fish can be caught in abundance and large sizes. In particular, the permit fishing at La Pescadora can be sensational with many fish caught in the upper teens to 20+ pound range and tarpon well over 100 pounds.
Here is what one of our friends/anglers had to say about La Pescadora.
Gents – I don’t know if we realize how lucky we are to have had such a great experience, but I do know that Carson did a fabulous job of giving us all the opportunity for which anyone could ask. Great timing, great people, great lodge and two guides per boat. In reflecting on the trip, I think this practice really distinguishes La Pescadora from all the other lodges from which I have fished. The extra set of eyes and hands when everything is going crazy is simply invaluable to success.
We all need to practice our casting, and I for one am going to do it before my return to Ascension Bay! That extra 10 or 15 feet makes a huge difference, as Carson proves time and again (OK, maybe we need an extra 20 or 30 to match him, but you know what I mean)! I’m looking forward to the return already. I’m thinking super slams and scorpions for all!
Carson, on behalf of our whole crew, MANY, MANY THANKS! for a trip well done. I think I speak for all when I say that all the research, effort, worry and planning that you put into these trips definitely paid off for the participants on this one, as many lasting, life memories were created and a few life fishing goals were reached! I know from experience that it is tough leading these type trips, particularly when you can’t begin to control all the variables, but thank you again for all you to do to bring this type of nirvana into our lives. We are fortunate people indeed.
Tight lines to all, Dave
Update, July 21-28, July 28- Aug 4th 2018. Two amazing weeks in Mexico. I lost count on other species but we did keep count of the permit. 47 permit landed. Tarpon up to 150lbs jumped and countless to 90lbs landed. Hundreds of bonefish. Plenty of other fun species jack, cubera snapper, sharks, and cuda.
Remember you get 20% off all gear and clothing you may need for this trip.
