One of my favorite trips of the year and one that keeps me tying flies all year long. This trip is a smashing success with runs of Chinook Salmon/Kings and Coho/Silver Salmon within a days drive from Charlottesville, Va. In addition, there are numerous steelhead, large browns and Atlantic Salmon . So, most days you can expect to hook a wide variety of species . If you want to fish for BIG fish in a river environment there is no substitute for Douglaston Salmon Run in Pulaski, NY.

The adventure begins around 5:00am on the Sunday we depart. After converging at the shop we load up and hit the road. We arrive at the two well appointed house that are are home base for the next few days around 2:00pm. After a quick unload of the vehicles, we get geared up and hit the river for a few hours that afternoon. This is a great way for you to see the river for the first time while it’s light out. The next time you will see the water is before the sun comes up the following morning.  Hopefully, you will get to experience the power and brute force of these fish that afternoon.

After a few hours on the water Sunday afternoon we head back to the houses to finish unpacking and get ready for dinner. That evening your host from the Albemarle Angler will get your breakfast, lunch, snack, and drink requests then head to the local grocery store to stock the kitchen with all your favorites.

Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday mornings start around 4:30am or earlier. The morning routine consists of having breakfast, making and packing your lunch, snacks, and drinks for the day. Having a waterproof backpack and headlamp or flashlight is highly recommended. We want to be sure we are out the door around 5:30am. After the long one minute drive across the street to the river, we will hike in to our fishing spot, approximately a 10 minute walk in the dark. Fishing is not allowed until sunrise which is around 6:30am this time of year. As we sit on the river bank waiting for sunrise, the excitement builds as the sound of huge fish that can’t be seen breach the water.

6:30, sunrise. The day of battling monsters starts. Most years hooking fish is not a problem, landing them is a different story. 9-10wt rods, reels with a very smooth drag system and a lot of backing will give you an advantage. Your willingness/ability to run after/chase your hooked fish up and down river will also increase your odds of landing more fish. Most days conclude around 4:00pm. Anglers arms are pretty sore by then and that gives us time to get by the cleaning station to have your catch cleaned and filleted or smoked before we head back to the houses to get cleaned up for dinner and drinks.

As with all of our hosted trips, anglers that have joined us the previous year have the first right of refusal. It is very rare for them to let go of their spots. We do have a number of anglers that have been on every trip we have taking to the Salmon River/Douglaston Salmon Run.
