Cold Water Float Trips

Musky Float Trips

Cooler water means it's time to hook into a musky! musky are large predatory fish with teeth to match. These iconic fish are aggressive and hit hard. Musky fishing trips offer an unforgettable experience as their elusive nature earns them the reputation as the “fish of 10,000 casts”. Explosive boatside follows after an articulated fly showcases the ferocious nature of these apex predators.

Here in Virginia, the cooler seasons offer the best musky fishing. Our expert guides will bring you through trophy waters that wind through scenic mountains, farmland, and forest. Albemarle Angler guides tailor each fly fishing trip to individual skill levels and provide insight into fish behavior throughout the year.

We recommend Musky trips to anglers ready to hone their patience and precision on the fly, all in the pursuit of that heart-pounding action of a musky chase!

Tailwater Trout Float Trips

The Jackson River tailwater offers cold water trout fishing year-round! Miles of productive trout water flows out from below Gathright Dam and brings anglers through picturesque forested mountains and quiet farmland. These conditions make it one of Virginia’s best wild trout fisheries with gorgeous rainbow and brown trout being found here. These populations maintain themselves naturally but there are occasional stockings. The Jackson tailwater is also home to smallmouth bass, rock bass, and sunfish, offering a well-rounded fishing experience!

Our expert guides will paddle you through fish-rich pools as well as make frequent stops to get out and wade into riffles and runs. There are 18 miles of navigable tailwater water flowing through Alleghany County. Albemarle Angler guides are constantly assessing conditions and will pick the best section for you and your party.

Warm Water Float Trips

Smallmouth Bass + Gar Float Trips

When water temperatures heat up, so does the smallmouth and gar fishing! Our float trips will take you down 8-10 miles of scenic Blue Ridge water. We predominantly fish the Shenandoah and the James rivers with occasional trips on the Jackson and Maury.

Our expert guides know these rivers forwards and back and will row you into the best spots! Each boat fits two anglers along with the guide. All skill levels are welcome on any of our trips as our guides are eager to teach! All trips with The Albemarle Angler include gear as needed. Of course, if you have gear you want to get dialed in on, bring it, but we have plenty of rods, reels, lines, flies, etc. for all situations. All float trips also include lunch.

The Shenandoah and James rivers are known for their large populations of smallmouth bass with some measuring over 20 inches! These predators hit hard and give a great fight. Nothing is more fun than having a smallie come up for a topwater fly. But a streamer on sinking line seems to entice them just as much.
