Weather and fishing have been awesome.
Water levels and temperatures are great on all our wadeable trout streams. These warm days have the fish and insect life acting like it’s spring already. There have been some very large caddis hatching. Anglers have managed to take a good number of fish over the past week on dries however, subsurface patterns produced very well.
They have cut the water flows back on the Jackson tailwater. Anglers on our float trips still manage to hook some very nice fish this past week. Hidden Valley not only fishes well this time of year but, is absolutely beautiful as well. With this weather, convincing them to come to the surface is not out of the question however streamers, nymphs and soft-hackles should keep your net wet.
The east and west slope brookie streams are amazing right now. If you really want to catch some beautiful fish on dries, heading to your favorite or a new brookie stream is a great way to spend a warm February day.
All our private waters are fishing very well. Sugar Hollow Farm is a great option if you live in the Charlottesville area and want to skip out of work a little early on one of these 70 degree days. Water levels are perfect on Big Bend and Big River right now. Big River will get an additional stocking this Friday. If you have not yet had the opportunity to fish Big River Farm, I highly recommend it. It’s one of the most beautiful properties we have and a amazing fishery.
Musky, they acted like musky this week. We only chased them one day this week. Managed to move some fish so, all in all not bad. We have a number of musky trips on the books for the next couple weeks so, we will keep our figures crossed and flies in the water.
I had the pleasure of fishing with so many great people this past week, I had to take a minute to say, thank you and congratulations to a few of them, Davis and Scotch congratulations on your first trout on the fly. Davis got a gift card from his grandparents for a guide trip with us for Christmas. He said it was the coolest Christmas gift he ever got.
Jill and Jessa spent a day on Sugar Hollow Farm fishing with friends Becca and Hannah, they took to fly fishing like a fish to water. Even though it was a little on the cold side that day they managed to catch fish on dries, nymphs and streamers. Congratulations ladies.
Thank you to all the anglers that fished with us this past week.
We look forward to seeing you on the water soon.
