Who doesn’t love spring time in Virginia? Mild weather, the beautiful bright colors of the spring blooms and so many happy species of fish.
Caddis continue to come off in large numbers and the trout can’t resist eating as many as they can. Most stocked trout water and brookie streams are fishing great. Caddis would be my go to fly of choice right now however, if you don’t see much surface action try caddis pupa, beadhead prince, or smaller white buggers.
Our private waters are fishing very well. Big Bend Farm is seeing the most caddis action with Big River Farm right behind it. The fish in Big River have been spooky over the past few days. Although not required a guide is highly recommended on BRF right now. For closer options to Charlottesville, you can’t go wrong with Sugar Hollow Farm. With some cooler more spring like weather on the way the next few weeks should be great.
The smallmouth bite is on. The James, Shenandoah and Rivanna couldn’t be fishing any better for this time of year. After a few years of very high flows during the spring we have been rewarded with perfect conditions so far this spring. Streamers, streamers and more streamers would be the fly of choice for smallies right now.
I do not have a firsthand report on shad however, reports from last week were good. From what I have been told it sounds like some anglers are thinking the main run has come and gone. I’ll be on the James in Richmond tomorrow and will put a post on facebook with an update.
On a side note, our new website is up and running. It’s still a work in progress but, hope you like it.
