The Hosted Trip:
Based out of the beautiful town of San Martin de los Andes, Apart Del Maiten is a lodge for the discerning and traveling angler. The lodge will serve as a base of operations for our group during our stay in Northern Patagonia. The inviting lodge provides all the necessary comforts and plenty more. Located on the edge of town adjacent to Lago Lacar, Apart Del Maiten is perfectly situated to take advantage of the many assets of this area.
We will spend the first few days of this trip floating the Alumine, Chimehuin, and wading the picturesque Malleo. These rivers are known for their abundance of trout in the 17-22 inch class, which can be taken readily on dry flies. If one prefers to fish streamers, it is tough to beat the sight fishing opportunities in seeing a true predator trout at work! Each day we will return to Apart Del Maiten for a luxurious dinner and much needed rest for long days of fishing.
On the fourth day we will depart San Martin de los Andes for a four day float trip on the Limay Medio. The Limay Medio is an infamous and mysterious river in Northern Patagonia known for its goliath brown trout. Resident fish average between 19 and 22 inches, but in March the large migratory browns and rainbows follow the spawning minnows into this wild section of hard to access river. They average between 26 and 30 inches and are measured in pounds or kilos instead of ounces. Trophy fish on the Limay are measured in double digits when it comes to pounds and can be over 36 inches! Large streamers are used to tempt some of the biggest fish, however the most dramatic strikes come from massive blitzing browns blowing up bait and floating minnow imitations on the surface. Here we fish 7-9 weight rods with heavy duty reels loaded with the maximum amount of backing. If you do not want to go to Tierra del Fuego to catch the largest trophy brown trout of your life, the Limay Medio is for you! Each night Andes Drifters will set up a deluxe riverside camp where you will enjoy full tents with cots, warm water, and a phenomenal mouth watering dinner.
